Xi'an drum music, the traditional music spread in Xi'an (Ancient Chang'an) and surrounding areas, is one of the world's intangible cultural heritage.
Xi'an drum music originated from Yanyue in the Tang Dynasty, and later it was integrated into court music. Xi'an drum music still maintains a fairly complete repertoire, notation, structure, instrument and performance form. Xi'an drum music is rich in repertoire, wide in content, diverse in modal styles, and complex in structure. The performance forms include sitting music and walking music, including tunes, sanqu, song chapters, and chanting. On September 30, 2009, at the Abu Dhabi meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO, Xi’an Gu Music was successfully selected as "Representative Works of Human Intangible Cultural Heritage".
On May 20, 2006, Xi’an drum music was approved by the State Council of the People’s Republic of China to be included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage list, intangible cultural heritage number Ⅱ-61. In 2009, the project was listed in UNESCO’s "Protection of Africa The Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Mankind under the Convention on the Tangible Cultural Heritage.
