(1) Submit a valid passport.

(2) Submit various documents related to the purpose of the application, such as proof of birth, marital status, education, work experience, etc.

(3) Fill out and submit the visa application form. Different visas require different forms, and most need to be filled out in a foreign language along with a personal photo.

(4) Meet with the embassy or consulate official of the destination country. Some countries stipulate that all immigration applicants must have an interview before a decision is made; others require an interview for non-immigrant visas as well.

(5) The embassy or consulate will submit the completed visa application forms and necessary supporting documents to the domestic competent department for review and approval. A few countries' embassies or consulates have the authority to issue visas directly but still need to report to the domestic authorities for record.

(6) The competent department of the destination country will conduct necessary reviews and notify the embassy or consulate of the approval result. If approved, a visa will be issued. If rejected, the applicant will also be notified.

(7) Pay the visa fee. Generally, the fee is paid when submitting the visa application, but in some countries, it is collected only upon successful application.
