What if a foreigner loses his passport in China?

Release time:2022-12-19    |    Number of views:

While working or visiting China, some foreigners may encounter the loss of their passport. If this happens to you or your friends, follow these steps to get a replacement passport:

Step1: go through the reporting procedures and get the loss report issued by the police station.

Confirm the location of the missing passport. If you know the exact location, ask local people around you for the police station responsible for that area, then go to the police station to apply for a lost passport and get a loss report.

If you don't know exactly where your passport is missing, report it to the local police station where you live. If you are traveling for business or leisure, report the loss of your passport at the police station in your hotel or apartment.

To sum up, police reports should be filed at the police station in the area where the lost property occurred, but if the passport is lost in an unknown area, it should be filed at the police station of the place of residence.

Step2: go to the Public Security Bureau to apply for "Passport loss Report Certificate".

What materials to prepare?

1) Three 2-inch headless color photos.

2) Identification documents (scan/copy of passport, home ID card, driver's license, student ID card, etc.).

3) Passport loss report.

       4) Fill in the loss report form of foreign entry and exit documents. 5) Any other documents deemed necessary by the PSB.

The Certificate is valid for 30 days and is approved by the airport, railway and hotel departments. So foreigners can use it to travel around China until they get a new valid passport and visa.

At this stage, it is recommended to contact your embassy in advance to find out the time and requirements for passport reprocessing.

Step 3: Apply for a new passport at the embassy or consulate of the country you belong to, and apply for a visa certificate at the public security organ before you can legally reside or leave the country successfully.

Each embassy has a different application process, so you may want to check with your embassy about the process for getting a new passport.

Note: Please keep the original Certificate of Passport Loss and give a copy to the embassy. The original will be your official identification document until your new passport is issued.

Step4: After applying for the new passport, go to the entry-exit department of public security to apply for the corresponding type of visa documents.

After the passport is issued, the applicant shall apply for the corresponding type of visa at the exit and entry department with the new passport, the Certificate of Reporting the Loss of Foreigner's Passport and the relevant materials required for reissuing the original visa.
