Banpo Site, a settlement site of yangshao Culture in the Neolithic Age with a history of 6,000 to 6,700 years, is located on the east bank of Chanhe River in Xi 'an, Shaanxi Province, covering an area of about 50,000 square meters.
Banpo site was discovered in 1953. From 1954 to 1957, five large-scale excavations were conducted on banpo Site, with a total excavation area of 10,000 square meters. There were 45 house ruins, 2 enclosures, more than 200 pits, 6 pottery pits, more than 250 tombs and about 10,000 tools of production and living utensils. From 2002 to 2005, important relics such as sacrificial rites and stone stones were found during the construction of banpo Site protection hall reconstruction project, which is of great value to the study of the settlement form, cultural connotation and social nature of Banpo site.
On March 4, 1961, Banpo Site was announced by The State Council of the People's Republic of China as one of the first national key cultural relics protection units.
